Tech Support Scams: Fake Microsoft and Apple Alerts
Browser pop-ups displaying urgent virus warnings with phone numbers represent one of the most profitable scam categories. The FBI estimates Americans lost $806 million to tech support fraud in 2023, with victims predominantly over age 60.
These scams begin with alarming pop-ups claiming Microsoft or Apple detected critical infections. The displayed phone number connects to call centers—often overseas—where "technicians" request remote computer access. Once connected, they install actual malware, demonstrate fake security scans showing nonexistent threats, and charge $200-$500 for worthless "fixes." Some operations hold computers hostage until victims pay additional fees.
Protection: Microsoft and Apple never contact users via pop-up warnings or unsolicited calls. Close suspicious browser windows using Task Manager (Windows) or Force Quit (Mac)—don't call displayed numbers. If you've granted remote access, disconnect from the internet immediately, run legitimate antivirus software, and change passwords from a different device. Report incidents to the FBI's IC3 at ic3.gov.
